Committee of the Regions : first debate on multilinguism and local authorities
The debate on the working paper about multilinguism started at the Committee of the Regions. The paper presented by the member Roberto Pella contains the guidelines of local authorities to promote a better knowledge of foreign languages. As well as reaffirmate the necessity to learn English since the nursery school, the paper pressed also for more attention for the European and extra-European languages, to improve the economic development of territories and the cohabitation and communication in the cities with a considerable presence of minorities or strangers. The Committee of the Regions is prefiguring the European Commission work on the same matter. The speaker Pella will meet the EU Commissioner for Multilingualism Leonard Orban, to explain the most interesting points for local authorities, is expected in the next months.
